Free Your Art

A fellow blogger of ours lives an interesting life in South Africa. At one time she existed only in the corporate world of Europe, but returning  to her roots, she went back to South Africa. You can read her blog at WordPress. Her blog is the Slowvelder.

She is creative in many ways and is also a painter. She and a few others recently started a Facebook page called, “Free Your Art.” This is a page for anyone, regardless of their experience. It invites members to submit their work based on a theme. The site is mostly geared toward canvas and paper, not photography although that hasn’t been ruled out.

I have dabbled in pencil, ink, acrylics, pastel, stained glass, and woodcarving. I made no great masterpieces but some of them are treasured. I have not engaged in any of these activities for some time. Every once in a while I get the bug to paint something, though. I want the next project to be a barn quilt.

I don’t really feel lacking for creative expression though I connect with others who don’t use my current medium. For now it is the camera…

Humans are creative by nature. From the great works of civilization to the gossip at the factory lunchroom. From painting to engineering, mechanics to writing, creativity may be what sets humans apart from our animal companions. But many people do not ever realize their abilities and that also is a source of misery.

Masses of people living in oppressive living conditions will rarely have moments for many creative expressions. We may not be able to save the world, but if we are able to free the art within ourselves, we free the world one soul at a time…
